What are your resolutions for 2018? Perhaps you want to meet new people. Maybe you want to learn a new skill or spend less time in front of the television or social media. Is giving back to your community one of your goals? You might even imagine yourself exploring untapped gems in your local area. If you have considered these things, then volunteerism may be your best New Year’s resolution.

Volunteering provides benefits to you, to organizations you care about, and to other members of our community. Did you know that about 25% of all Americans volunteer their time in community organizations? Along with a range of other organizations hosting volunteers, about 1,000,000 hours of volunteer work takes place in U.S. museums every week!

If you’re looking to keep your brain active by learning new things and sharing that information with young and old alike, volunteering as a museum guide could be a good fit. Have you wondered about the backstory behind objects on display or the connections between galleries? Do you enjoy hearing new perspectives that connect seemingly unrelated stories or artifacts? Bring your passion for arts and culture to school kids and community groups from around the region, while meeting new friends and expanding your knowledge.

Not interested in giving tours? There are many ways to get involved at local museums. From special event help to cataloging objects behind the scenes, we are always looking for new volunteers. Museum volunteers are a fun, curious, empathetic bunch who embrace life-longer learning for themselves and for our community.

At Spurlock Museum, we are seeking new volunteers interested in world cultures. If your interests lie in the arts or in history, there are museums throughout the county that use volunteers to make sure that our heritage is accessible to as many people as possible.
