Research Remarks

Published Description

APULIAN RED-FIGURE LEKANIS LID Knob handle, with an indented and reserved center. Center decorated with stylized lotuses and dots, encircled by a band. Reserved band on underside of knob. Vertical lines on reserved lip. On each side of lid a woman's head in profile to left. Each wears a kekryphalos, stephane, and earrings. Rosette below one woman's chin, the other head flanked with volutes and dots. Palmettes separate the heads. Attributed to the Group of Marburg 788 (workshop of the White Sacos Painter) by A. D. Trendall. Late fourth century B. C. -- Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plates 52, 2 and 55, 2.
