Performance: Spurlock Museum Cultural Celebration Series: Jason Finkelman

On Sunday, September 24, the Spurlock Museum hosts percussionist and composer Jason Finkelman as the featured performer in its Cultural Celebration Series. This free, family-friendly series highlights music, dance, and storytelling from around the world on the 4th Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM.

A Philadelphia-born percussionist, Finkelman performs on African and Brazilian instruments handcrafted by African percussionist and instrument maker Adimu Kuumba. Finkelman specializes in the berimbau, a musical bow originating in Africa and recognized today in the accompaniment of the martial art capoeira. Finkelman's artistic concerns focus on improvised music, cross-cultural collaborative projects, and composition for dance, theater, and film. An accompanist for the UIUC Department of Dance since 2000, Finkelman has directed Global Arts Performance Initiatives, an engagement outreach program of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, since 2012.
