Body of the Temple
This sign posted at the entrance of the temple warns tourists about how they should dress and the fact that menstruating women are denied entrance. Menstrual blood is considered to render a woman’s body temporarily polluted, thus barring her from the pure space of the temple. Blood is also said to attract demons. By staying away from the temple, menstruating women are protecting the temple and its visitors from this pollution and from the malevolence and disruptive impulses of demons.
