You are then invited to an odalan, an anniversary festival held every 210 days to celebrate a temple’s birthday. All Balinese temples, from the smallest household shrine to the pan-Balinese “mother” temple of Besakih, have these celebrations. At the festival, the gods are invited to descend into doll-like effigies housed in shrines prepared especially for them. Once they have descended, the gods/effigies are carried in procession to a holy spring, river, or the sea, and ritually “bathed.” As temple members carry the gods to the bathing place and back, their entire journey is accompanied by gamelan beleganjur (a processional ensemble of percussive instruments).
