Introduction
Nyoman, the musician you’ve met, explains that many of the musical ensembles encountered in Bali are called gamelan. The type, number, and materials of instruments vary between gamelan, as do the contexts and regions in which they are found. The instruments—often cast from bronze—are made and tuned to stay together as a set. Instruments found in gamelan include metallophones (metal keys placed over resonators, resembling xylophones), kettle gongs (small gongs horizontally placed in a rack), hanging gongs, double-headed drums, bamboo flutes, and cymbals.
