Calonarang
One night Nyoman takes you to a performance for tourists. The program is staged by a local troupe that is trying to raise funds to buy a new gamelan. The show is held in a large pavilion with a raised stage at the front. The audience sits in chairs in neat rows, applauding and clapping after each piece. This atmosphere is very different from a temple festival where performances are often held for the pleasure of the gods, and people chat, walk about, and even eat, but never clap.
