Kebyar

Kebyar, a term that means to “flare up,” is the name of a musical style that emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century. By the end of the century, kebyar had become the dominant style on Bali, performed in contexts ranging from temple ceremonies to tourist shows. Kebyar music is characterized by sudden, dramatic changes in tempo and volume. The dance style that emerged concurrently is also typified by sudden changes in movement and speed.
