SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:"Film: “Dirt & Deeds in Mississippi”"
DESCRIPTION:"\r“Dirt & Deeds in Mississippi” is the untold story of black landowning families in Mississippi. The film shows their fight for racial equality and the right to vote, and how they became the secret weapon of the non–violent civil rights movement. This Television Academy Award winning documentary is co–produced by alumna Doris Derby (MS, ’75, PhD, ’80, anthropology) and is narrated by Danny Glover.\r\rDr. Derby came of age during and documented historic events of our nation’s civil rights movement while working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in Mississippi. Several of her photos are on display at the recently opened National Museum of African American History and Culture within the Smithsonian Institution.\r\rThis event is sponsored by the College of LAS Alumni Association, the Department of African–American Studies, and the Department of Anthropology.\r"
