SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:"Spurlock Sundays: Artful Nature: Rocks and Minerals"
DESCRIPTION:"\rThis Artful Nature program offers visitors an opportunity to create a uniqe project inspired by the natural world. The theme this week is:\rRocks and Minerals.\r\r\rJoin local mosaic artist Safir Kaylan for a drop-in workshop to make a mosaic pendant, like the one featured in the image above, using stone tiles. This project is best for older children and adults, and we recommend arriving early in the session to have enough time to complete your project. Younger children can join museum staff in our Ancient Mediterranean gallery to make a mosaic with safe, soft materials.\r\r\rSafir has studied at the Chicago Mosaic School and Ravenna Mosaic Art School and holds a BA in Applied Liberal Studies from Western Michigan University. See more of her work on her website safirk contemporary mosaic (external link). \rSpurlock Sundays: Fall in Love with Nature\rThis fall, we’re exploring connections between nature and culture with 4 month-long series of programs on water, trees, rocks and minerals, and ice and snow. We’ll look at the ways different cultures have used natural resources, explained natural phenomena, and found inspiration in the world around them. Examine artifacts, hear stories, and dig into sample materials. Experts from around town and campus will offer demonstrations and discussions. All programs are free and available on a drop-in schedule. \r\rEach month has a distinct theme, with a series of programs for different ages and learning styles within those themes. The second Sunday of each month is our feature program of the month, Discovery Days, that will bring together a range of activities and experts for a more in-depth exploration of the month’s theme. The third Sunday of each month Artful Nature offers visitors an opportunity to create a unique project inspired by the natural world. All other Sundays are a Culture Lab with drop-in activities led by our museum guides. Join them for mini-tours, scavenger hunts, and touchable artifacts.\rOther Events in the SeriesSeptember: Water\r9/2 Culture Lab\r9/9 Discovery Day\r9/16 Artful Nature\r9/23 Culture Lab\r9/30 Culture Lab\rOctober: Trees\r10/7 Culture Lab\r10/14 Discovery Day\r10/21 Artful Nature\r10/28 Culture Lab\rNovember: Rocks and Minerals\r11/4 Culture Lab\r11/11 Discovery Day\r11/18 Artful Nature \r11/25 Culture Lab\rDecember: Ice and Snow\r12/2 Culture Lab\r12/9 Discovery Day\r12/16 Culture Lab\r\rParticipants can make a pendant like these.
