SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:"POSTPONED: Exhibit Opening: Chances Are..."
DESCRIPTION:"\rUnfortunately, this event has been canceled due to COVID-19. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We expect to postpone this event and the related exhibit to the fall 2020 semester.\r\rPlayful by Design (external link) will host a special exhibit and symposium opening event at the Spurlock on Thursday, April 2, 3:00–5:00 pm. For the first hour, guests can enjoy a reception with game demonstrations and remarks by exhibit lender Professor David Dubin. At 4:00 pm, special guest Lual Mayen, founder of Junub Games and leader in the field of social impact games, presents the keynote talk. Mayen began developing the peace-building game Salaam while a refugee in Northern Uganda.\r\rThe exhibit opening event is co-sponsored by the Spurlock Museum and Playful by Design. Lual Mayen's talk is the culminating event in the Migration and Game Studies Project, a collaboration between Playful by Design and the Women and Gender in Global Perspectives Program (WGGP), and funded by the Illinois Global Institute. Exhibit artifacts are on loan from David Dubin and Kim Sheahan.\rAbout the Exhibit and Symposium\rThe new exhibit Chances Are… opens April 2 in the Museum’s Central Core Gallery. This display features a variety of games of chance, including the ancient Mesopotamian Royal Game of Ur, roulette, bingo, and Decktet, Games Magazine’s 2013 Card Game of the Year. \r\rThis project is part of the 3rd annual Spring Symposium held by Playful by Design (external link), an interdisciplinary game studies consortium at the University of Illinois. The Symposium features demonstrations, discussions, panels, and presentations highlighting technology, pedagogy, and design as they relate to gaming and game design. \r\r"
