SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:"\"The Cultural Politics of Identity and the Cuban Revolution\""
DESCRIPTION:"\rCenter for Advanced Study\rCAS/MillerComm Lecture Series\r\"The Cultural Politics of Identity and the Cuban Revolution\"\r\rLouis A. Pérez, Jr.\rJ. Carlyle Sitterson Professor of History, University of North\rCarolina, Chapel Hill\r\rDr. Pérez will provide an overview of the interaction, or \"special\rrelations,\" between Cubans and North Americans spanning the late\rnineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. This\rrelationship will be seen from both the perspective of how North\rAmericans came to know Cubans, and vice versa, how Cubans have come to\rknow and represent North Americans. The emphasis is on popular\rculture and consumption, advancing the argument that these were\rconditions central to the climate that greeted the triumph of the\rrevolution in 1959.\r\rMuseum visitors are reminded that outside food and drinks are not\rallowed in the Museum. Backpacks and other large items brought to the\rMuseum will have to be stored; there is limited locker storage space\ravailable for these items.\r"
