SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:"Improvisers Exchange Artist Residency: Conversation with Jason Kao Hwang"
DESCRIPTION:"\rJason Kao Hwang and curator Jason Finkelman discuss representations of Asian-American identity and social justice in avant-garde jazz, music improvisation and new music composition. The conversation will include Hwang’s composition “Occupation of Silence”, artistic approaches in addressing Anti-Asian hate, and reflection on the Nikkeijin Illinois exhibition at Spurlock Museum.\r\rJason Finkelman is the curator of the new exhibit Nikkeijin Illinois at the Spurlock, on display through December 10. Nikkeijin Illinois will offer a historical view of the Japanese American experience by highlighting former and current Japanese American students, faculty, and staff at Illinois. Archival documents will illustrate the college Nisei story at Illinois, while a digital platform provides an opportunity for today’s Nikkeijin—those of Japanese heritage—on campus and in our community to center collective histories of struggle and perseverance. \r\rIf you are interested in learning more about Jason Kao Hwang (external link), visit his website.\r"
