The New Life Stage of Emerging Adulthood\"\r\rJeffrey Jensen Arnett\rResearch Professor, Department of Psychology, Clark College\r\rDr. Arnett coined the term \"emerging adulthood\" to describe the new\rstage of life that has developed in industrialized societies in recent\rdecades.  Young people in their late teens and twenties are postponing\rtraditional milestones such as finishing education, marriage,\rparenthood, and full-time employment.  Dr. Arnett and colleagues are\rexploring this new developmental stage and its impact on individuals,\rfamilies and society.  He has authored a book on adolescents in the\rheavy metal subculture, Metalheads: Heavy Metal Music and Adolescent\rAlienation (1996, Westview Press).  He also is the author of the\rtextbook Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the\rLate Teens Through the Twenties and has edited a book on emerging\radulthood with Jennifer Tanner: Emerging Adults in America: Coming of\rAge in the 21st Century.  Dr. Arnett received his PhD from the\rUniversity of Virginia and did three years of postdoctoral work at the\rUniversity of Chicago.  From 1992-98 he was Associate Professor in the\rDepartment of Human Development and Family Studies at the University\rof Missouri.  He has been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University\rand the University of Maryland.   He is the chair of the Special\rInterest Group on Emerging Adulthood sponsored by the Society for\rResearch on Adolescence.\r\rMuseum visitors are reminded that food and drinks are not allowed in\rthe Museum.  Backpacks and other large items brought to the Museum\rwill have to be stored; there is limited locker storage space\ravailable for these items.\r"
