SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:"\"Searching for Unconventional Superconductors: A Quantum Map-Quest\""
DESCRIPTION:"\rCenter for Advanced Study\rThe Center for Advanced Study Eighteenth Annual Lecture\r\"Searching for Unconventional Superconductors: A Quantum Map-Quest\"\r\rDale J. Van Harlingen\rCenter for Advanced Study Professor of Physics, University of Illinois\rat Urbana-Champaign\r\rSuperconductivity is one of the most remarkable and potentially useful\rphenomena ever discovered-- the ability of a material to carry\relectrical current without any loss of energy by heating was an\ramazing and unexpected observation first made almost 100 years ago.\rThe mysterious behavior of superconductors was finally explained 50\ryears ago by researchers at the University of Illinois, led by\rtwo-time Nobel Laureate John Bardeen.\r\rHowever, in the last few decades several new classes of\rsuperconductors have been discovered that exhibit even more exotic\rproperties and even greater potential for technological impact. These\r\"unconventional superconductors\" are once again challenging our\runderstanding of condensed matter physics and the quantum world and\rmay revolutionize our lives through energy transmission, secure\rcommunication, medical imaging, and quantum computing.\r\rIn this talk, Van Harlingen will describe our quest to characterize\rthe extraordinary and puzzling properties of the new superconductors\rand \"zoom in\" to the quantum world that holds the key to understanding\rand exploiting them.\r\rFor more information about Spurlock Museum facilities\ror for other inquiries, contact Brian Cudiamat at (217) 333-0889.\r\rMuseum visitors are reminded that outside food and drinks are not\rallowed in the Museum. Backpacks and other large items brought to the\rMuseum will have to be stored; there is limited locker storage space\ravailable for these items.\r"
