CANCELED: Talk: "What Can We Learn From Uber? 3 Large Scale Field Experiments on Tipping, the Gender Pay Gap, and Apologies" by John List

  • Event Date: Thursday, February 27, 2020

Part of the David Kinley Lecture Series

This talk has been canceled. The Department of Economics is hoping to reschedule the talk to a future date.

Each year, the Department of Economics at the University of Illinois is proud to invite one of the leading scholars in the profession to deliver a public lecture to help celebrate David Kinley's contribution to the University and the economics profession. This year, we are proud to welcome Professor John List.

Field experiments with firms have become an important source of knowledge in the social sciences. In this lecture, List will discuss his three field experiments with Uber, the leader in the ride-share industry. The experiments examine the economics of tipping, the economics of the gender pay gap, and the economics of apologies. These experiments have driven company decisions by Uber and provided new insights on important economic issues.

John A. List is the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago. List is a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research uses field experiments to address both positive and normative questions on how incentives schemes can improve markets, how behavioral economics can augment economic models, how interventions can improve early childhood education, and how the gig economy has affected the gender earnings gap. List's research includes over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and several published books, including the 2013 international best-seller: The Why Axis: Hidden Motives and the Undiscovered Economics of Everyday Life (with Uri Gneezy).

This lecture is presented by the Department of Economics. David Kinley is the most distinguished and important economist in the Department's history. He founded the Department, served as its first Head, and in 1913 was its second member to be elected President of the American Economics Association. He went on to serve as President of the University of Illinois from 1920–1930 with great success. To honor David Kinley, his family has generously endowed this public lecture series.
