The Spurlock Museum of World Cultures is excited to announce a new discussion-based film series, "International Activism in Film." The series is a part of our current exhibit, Debates, Decisions, Demands: Objects of Campaigns and Activism (October 16, 2020–May 23, 2021), and will offer a closer look at 5 award-winning films from Brazil, Cambodia, Czech Republic, India, and South Africa. The discussions will take place over Zoom and are free to attend, no registration required.

The series will launch on Wednesday, January 27 at 7:00 pm CT in a discussion of The Legend of Bhagat Singh (India, 2002), a historical biopic about a young man, Bhagat Singh, played by actor Ajay Devgan, trying to help free Colonial India from British rule. Professor Nilanjana Bhattcharjya, of Arizona State University will offer insight on the film’s cultural and historical context. Dr. Bhattacharjya, honors faculty fellow and principal lecturer at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, has published widely in South Asian, Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Musicology. The events will take place over Zoom. The film is available on Netflix, and we encourage attendees to watch it ahead of the discussion.

About the Exhibit

Debates, Decisions, Demands: Objects of Campaigns and Activism will be on display through May 23, 2021. The exhibit explores different ways an individual can be involved in politics: as a candidate, a campaigner, a voter, and a protester. Many of the exhibit’s objects come from the People’s Collection, which focuses on three-dimensional objects related to American presidential elections. Included in the exhibit are photographs from local, national, and global events. Accompanying the museum’s own objects are loaned exhibits that focus on historical documents and photographs: Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow organized by the New-York Historical Society, Rightfully Hers from the National Archives, and Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
