Middle East Documentary Film Series: Sonita

On October 28 at 7:00 pm, join a virtual screening of the film, Sonita. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Sonita Alizadeh, Afghan rapper, activist fighting to end child marriage, and the subject of the film.

About the Film

Sonita (2015), Directed by Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami, 1 hr 30 min

After her family attempts to sell her into marriage, a young Afghan refugee in Iran channels her frustrations and seizes her destiny through rap music. Grabbing the mic, she spits fiery rhymes in the face of oppressive traditions.

The film series Living Music features documentaries of daily life in the Middle East region, with a focus on the lives of musicians and the impact of music on society. Through the films and post-screening discussions, attendees will learn about the cultures represented in the films.
