For over 70 years, Warren I. Smith has contributed to American Jazz and Music as a percussionist; composer; arranger; leader; curator; archivist; educator; activist and mentor to generations of jazz artists.
Mr. Smith returns to the University of Illinois to receive an FAA Distinguished Legacy Award and to perform his compositions with The Forest, a multi-generational percussion ensemble at Krannert Center on Wednesday, October 16.
Leah Bowden, percussionist and archivist for Warren Smith will moderate this special conversation on an extraordinary musical life that dynamically led to collaborations with Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, Gil Evans, Janis Joplin, Max Roach, Van Morrison, and Anthony Braxton among many others.
