Research Remarks

Description

This Greek coin is a silver Tetradrachm from Athens in central Greece. It was struck in the 4th century BCE. The obverse contains a profile of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, war, and peace and patron of Athens, wearing a crested helmet. The reverse is an owl, the symbol of Athena, head facing forward. To the left of the owl are an olive twig, the tree that Athena gifted to the Athenians, and a crescent. To the right of the owl are the letters ΑΘΕ (Alpha Theta Epsilon) denoting the coin is from Athens.
