Research Remarks
| Description | This Greek coin is a silver Tetradrachm from Pergamum on the western coast of modern day Turkey. This coin was struck in 280 BCE. The obverse contains a profile of Philetairos, a local ruler of Pergamum. The reverse is an enthroned Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, war and peace, wearing a helmet and leaning on a shield. Behind Athena is a bow. In her outstretched right hand she holds a wreath, almost crowning the Greek letters that spell out Philetairos’ name: ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ (Phi Iota Lambda Epsilon Tau Alpha Iota Rho Omicron Upsilon). |
