Description | This Greek coin is a silver Stater from the ancient city of Metapontum in southern Italy. Italy, as well as Sicily, was part of Magna Graecia (Great Greece) and had Greek colonies. The coin was struck in the late 4th century. The obverse is profile image of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest. The reverse shows an ear of corn. To the left of the ear are the letters META (Mu Epsilon Tau Alpha) denoting that it is from Metapontum. |
