Research Remarks
Description | This Greek coin is a silver Tetradrachm most likely from Macedonia in northern Greece. It was struck during the late 4th century BCE. The obverse is a profile of a young Hercules, son of Zeus and symbol of strength, wearing his usual lion skin. The reverse is an enthroned Zeus, Greek king of the gods, holding an eagle in his right hand and a scepter in his left hand. Starting under Zeus’ feet are the letters ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ (Beta Alpha Sigma Iota Lambda Epsilon Omega Sigma) ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (Alpha Lambda Epsilon Xi Alpha Nu Delta Rho Omicron Upsilon) translating to King Alexander for Alexander the Great. |
