Description | This Greek coin is a bronze of unknown denomination from Syracuse on Sicily. Sicily, as well as Italy, was part of Magna Graecia (Great Greece) that had Greek colonies. This coin was struck in the early 3rd century BCE. The obverse is a profile of Hercules, son of Zeus and symbol of strength, wearing his usual lion skin. The reverse is Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, war, and peace, brandishing a spear and holding a shield. |
