Research Remarks
Description | This Greek coin is a Hemidrachm from Macedonia in northern Greece. It was struck sometime during the reign of Demetrios I of Macedon, called Poliorketes, the ‘besieger,’ in the early 3rd century. The obverse is Poseidon, Greek god of the sea, wielding his trident. To the left of Poseidon are the letters ΔΗΝΗΤΡΙ (Delta Eta Nu Eta Tau Rho Iota) for Demetrios. To the left and through the legs of the Poseidon the letters are harder to determine, but it could be ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩ (Beta Alpha Sigma Iota Lambda Epsilon Omega) meaning king. The reverse is Nike, Greek goddess of victory, on the prow of a ship. |
