Description | This Greek coin is a Hemilitron from Syracuse on the island of Sicily. Sicily, as well as Italy, was part of Magna Graecia (Great Greece) that had Greek colonies. The coin was struck in the mid-4th century BCE. The obverse is a profile of Zeus, Greek king of the gods, with short hair and his head wreathed in laurel. The Greek letters around the edge are indistinct. The reverse is a thunderbolt, Zeus’ symbol and weapon of choice. Around the edges are the letters ΣΥΡΑΟΣΙΩΝ (Sigma Upsilon Rho Alpha Omicron Sigma Iota Omega Nu) denoting it is from Syracuse. |
