Published Description

ITALIC BLACK-GLAZE OINOCHOE SHAPE AND ORNAMENT Ovoid body, slightly flaring and grooved foot. Flaring mouth, pinched into a trefoil with pointed front. Glaze continues inside neck. Slight ridge around neck. Body ribbed, handle s-shaped and lightly fluted. Molded female head at base of handle. DIMENSIONS AND CONDITION H. 0.071 m.; d. body 0.098 m. Fine tan clay, glossy black glaze with blue sheen. glaze slightly chipped at base of handle and on foot. From Naples. Attributed as Campanian by D. Amyx (in a letter dated 5/5/79). First half of the third century B.C. This vase may not be Campanian but central Italic, since its closest parallel is a 'Romano-Etruscan' ribbed oinochoe from the Volterra region, Toronto, Royal Ontario Museum. -- Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plate 62, 5-6.
