Research Remarks

Published Description

This cup, like the funerary mask below, was excavated and named by Heinrich Schliemann. The cup seemed to him reminiscent of one described by Homer in the Iliad which had belonged to Nestor, an elder contemporary of Agamemnon noted for his eloquence. In accordance with Homer's description, Schliemann saw the bird figures on the handles as representations of doves, but some modern scholars see them as falcons.
