Description | The Niobid of the Chiaramonti Gallery. The slaughter of the Niobids, the children of Niobe, by arrows from Apollo and Artemis is a favorite story in Greek mythology. This replica is from a possible Roman copy of a fourth century B.C. Greek statue. The original, in marble, shows one of the daughters of Niobe fleeing for her life. The copy, believed to be Roman, was found near Tivoli, a town about fifteen miles east of Rome. It is now in the Chiaramonti Gallery of the Vatican. - Unknown source |
