Research Remarks
| Description | The Hildesheim hoard was the largest collection of Roman silver ever found outside of the frontiers of the Roman Empire. Found in 1868 and has been explained as the plate belonging to some Roman commander that was lost on a campaign against German tribes. No precise date can be given to the Hildesheim Treasure though most of it that can be dated belongs to the early empire: 1st century CE. D.E. Strong, 1966, Greek and Roman Gold and Silver Plate. p.127 and 133. |
