Published Description

An ancient corn goddess, Ceres was identified with the Greek goddess Demeter at an early date and as a result of this association became one of the twelve great deities of the Roman pantheon. This is a replica of the Greek work found in the ruins of ancient Cnidus, a city of Caria, at the extreme southwest corner of modern Turkey. In the original, the head, of superior workmanship, is Parien marble. The body, of no more than adequate workmanship, is of inferior local marble. Original in the British Museum.
