Published Description

THE CULT OF SAINTS Since the days of the first martyrs, Christians of heroic virtue have inspired veneration. They are believed to have a special relationship with God, allowing them to intercede on behalf of the faithful. Saints’ relics are housed in churches in reliquaries. (1) Reliquary. Courtesy the Diocese of Peoria. (2) St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. France. 49.2.2. (3) Enamelled portrait discs with unidentified saints. Italy, 11th C. 37.2.1-2. (4) Medieval Irish reliquary. Its shape suggests that the original held a saint’s arm or finger bone. Replica. 16.6.31.
