Research Remarks

Published Description

"A free-blown, blue-green cosmetic container of "colorless" glass, this piece features two phials that were formed from a single bubble of glass by pressing the sides to form a diaphragm. Milky and iridescent weathering is evident on the exterior surface. One tube is broken near the bottom. The irregular, slightly bulging bases of the tubes are solid and flattened. The rim is rounded. Spiral threading of a darker blue-green decorates the upper half of the vessel, but once covered the entire surface. The dark blue-green trailed threads form a basket handle over the top, and two small loop handles at the sides. Similar examples may be seen in Matheson, p. 120. no. 325; Auth, p. 146, no. 187; Hayes, 1975, p. 101, no. 360, pl. 28, no. 361, pl. 22." -Eunice Dauterman Maguire, Henry Maguire and Maggie J. Duncan-Flowers, Art and Holy Powers in the Early Christian House (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1989), 186.
