Research Remarks

Published Description

"This is a pale bluish green flask, with a circular flat-sided body, a long, thin tubular neck, and a slightly flattened, pushed-in base. The body is covered with a light mold-blown ribbing, twisted spirally. The tapering neck flares out at the top to form a wide mouth. The rim is folded inward. The neck is decorated with a single trailed thread of a dark, peacock blue. Two symmetrically placed loop handles of the same color extend from the midpoint of the neck to the shoulders. The vessel sows evidence of iridescent weathering. Similar flat-sided flasks may be seen in Auth, p. 36, no. 171, and Hayes, 1975, p. 106, no. 389, pl. 22. For related pilgrim flasks in glass, see Auth, p. 220, nos. 455-59." -Eunice Dauterman Maguire, Henry Maguire and Maggie J. Duncan-Flowers, Art and Holy Powers in the Early Christian House (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1989), 109.
