Research Remarks

Description

ATTIC RED-FIGURE CUP (TYPE B)
Continuous curve body, foot with narrow base fillet. A border of maeander with cross-squares surrounds the scene of the interior. Exterior fully glazed except for interiors of handles and edge of foot. On underside of foot, one glazed band near edge.
Subject I, Youth reclines to right against a striped pillow on a couch with his head turned back and his lower body covered with a himation. He gestures with his left hand. Beside him stands a youth who wears a himation. Relief contour throughout. Dilute glaze for hanging fold of spread below couch.
From Chianciano. Attributed to the Splanchnopt Painter of the Pethesilea Workshop by D. von Bothmer. About 470 B. C. -- Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plate 27, 1-2.
