Description

Apulian Gnathia Kantharos
Shape and Ornament - Indented body, high handles. A, from top to bottom: incised line, egg pattern, wavy band, double incised line, dots, wide band, clusters of grapes alternating with leaves and tendrils. B, Two sprays of dot ivy around double incised stems. Two incised lines on reserves and reddened stem. Three grooves on glazed edge of foot. Alternating reserved and reddened bands and glazed bands on underside of foot.
Accessory Colors - Red: A, half of wavy band and wide line, dots, half of grape bunches, leaves and tendrils. B, incised stems and upper leaves. Yellow: A, half of wavy band and half of grape bunches, B, lower leaves.
Dimensions and Condition - H. 0.070 m.; preserved w. 0.090 m.; d. rim 0.089 m.; d. foot 0.042 m. Dark red clay, glossy black glaze. Repaired from several fragments. One handle missing, the other restored. Interior completely glazed.

Attributed to the Knudsen Group by J. R. Green (in a letter dates 8/14/79), who writes that this is a special type of kantharos belonging only to the Knudsen Group, about 320 B.C. -- Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plate 58, 5.
