Published Description | CAMPANIAN RED-FIGURE CHOUS Shape and Ornament: Trefoil mouth, flaring foot. Egg pattern on reserved neck. Below the handle, a full palmette flanked by dot rosettes and florals. Reserved ground line. Traces of red wash on all reserved areas. Subject: A woman walking left approaches an altar. She wears a peplos, a kekryphalos (?), and double bracelets, necklace, and earrings, and holds a mirror in her left hand and a fillet in her right. Behind her is a fillet hanging on the wall and a box (?) on the ground. Relief contour for outlines of woman and peplos. Dilute glaze for peplos details, headdress, arm muscles, mirror, shading of far side of altar. Accessory Colors: White woman's fillet, shoes, altar flame, and details of box and florals. Yellow woman's headband, jewelry, belt, and details of box and florals. Probably by the Painter of B.M. F 63. Attributed by A. D. Trendall (in a letter dated 8/3/79). About 350-320 B. C. -- Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plate 53, 4-5. An Italic oenochoe with trefoil mouth; of Apulian workmanship under Greek influence. Scene is a woman with mirror in left hand, fillet in right, moving toward stele; behind her is fillet and box. Relief contour for outlines of woman and peplos. Dilute glaze for peplos details, headdress, arm muscles, mirror. shading of far side of altar. |
