Published Description

SICILIAN RED-FIGURE SKYPHOID PYXIS AND LID Shape and Ornament: Round body with ring base, convex lid with knob in two degrees. Ivy leaves connected with incised stems on lid. Also reserved are a band around rim, and interior of knob except for one glazed band. Subject: On each side of pyxis, a woman's head seen in profile and facing left. Her curly hair is bound in a kekryphalos. Between the heads are palmettes flanked with volutes. Dilute glaze for women's hair. Accessory Colors: White (faded) ivy leaves. Identified by A. D. Trendall as Sicilian rather than Campanian (in a letter dated 8/3/79). About 325-300 B. C. -- Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plate 55, 5.
