Research Remarks

Description

ITALIC BLACK-GLAZE GUTTUS
Shape and Ornament - Convex body, incised ribs on the body, grooved cross underneath the handle. Tall flaring foot with center ridge and upper part reserved.
Subject - On the medallion, a wreathed head of Dionysos in relief.
Dimensions and Condition - H. 0.099 m.; d. body 0.105 m.; d. foot 0.054 m. Fine tan clay, glossy black glaze with blue metallic sheen. Broken spout. Glaze slightly chipped on lower body, upper foot reserved.
Campania. Late fourth to early third centuries B.C. --Wisseman, Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Plate 64, 2 and 5.
