Published Description

"Truncated conical weights of this type, made of clay or stone, were essential components of the warp-weighted loom. Warp threads were tied to a horizontal bar supported on two posts, and stretched and tightened by weights attached to groups of threads at the bottom. This example is pierced vertically with a hole through which is gathering of warp threads was guided and tied. The surface, marred by a large chip, is decorated with a branch motif consisting of along incised vertical line with short, slightly oblique horizontal lines on either side. For comparable loom weights, see Paris, pp. 195, 197, no. 143a, b; Petrie, 1917, nos. 138-39, pl. LXV; Strzygowski, p. 249, 7145a, b." -Eunice Dauterman Maguire, Henry Maguire and Maggie J. Duncan-Flowers, Art and Holy Powers in the Early Christian House (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1989), 154.
