Research Remarks
Published Description | Per Joel Gordon, Dept. of History, UIUC, 1997: (Info on 1949.07.0001). "Listing should be changed to indicate that this is part of a tombstone or grave marker, the decorative cap indicating status or rank. In this case Jim Dengate's hunch that this cap marks the grave as that of a religious scholar ('alim/ pl. 'ulema) is very likely correct. I am guessing that this piece is contemporary to .0003 (the fez). If so, they post-date the clothing reforms of the 1820's, after which only 'ulema wore the turban depicted, and pre-dates more modern religious head coverings." |
