Description

Coin struck during the reign of Ilkhãn Abu Sa‘id Bahadur, 1316–1335
Silver double dirhem, c. 1322–1323 (722 and 723 AH)
Mint: probably al-Mawsil (Mosul), Diar Rabi’a, in modern northern Iraq, or Shustar in modern southwestern Iran
Yale Collection.

Obverse: Inscription within pentagon, with date formula in circular margin: translated as “Struck in the days of the rule of the Sultan most mighty, Abu Sa’id Bahadur Khan, May Allah perpetuate his reign” (Arabic language).

Reverse: Inscription within a circle: a Muslim kalima with the words “struck at” and either “al-Mawsil” or “Shustar” located between the lines and the names of the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs inscribed around it, the kalima being the shahada, or testimony of faith: La ilaha illa ‘llah, Muhammad, Rasul ‘llah, translated as “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God” (Arabic language).
