Research Remarks
Published Description | Card accompanying artifact at purchase: "B.M Replica. A leaf of a diptych representing the apotheosis of an emperor. It is likely that the three figures are the same individual portrayed at three distinct moments: beneath in a funeral procession, in the middle driving a quadrigia up into the sky, and above being borne through the air by figures representing sleep and death. Probably carved in Rome about A.D. 450. Height 11 7/8 inches. (Replica made of resin composition.) |
