Description | Description from exhibit catalog by Kathleen Cairns: "Tong--Sir William Vernon, 1467. In armour, with his widow Margaret and seven sons and five daughters (three sets of twins). An altar tomb. The chamfered inscription around the tomb omitted. His tilting casque bears his heraldic colors on the mantling. His armour is of the late Yorkist style. His widow stands on an elephant. The many scrolls bear prayers for grace and pardon. Sir William was Knight Constable for England, son and heir of Sir Richard Vernon, treasurer of Calais." |
