Description | Description in 1971-72 exhibit catalog by Kathleen Cairns: "Salisbury--Robert Wyvil, 1375, bishop of Salisbury Cathedral for 45 years. While bishop he recovered the Castle of Sherborne and the Chase of Bere for the church. The bishop is shown standing in the castle in half effigy in his episcopal vestments, with mitre and crozier. Below, before the gate, stands the bishop's champion. He is the knight who defended the Castle of Sherborne. He bears a rectangular shield and carries a war banner. The chase of Bere is represented by rabbits and warrens." |
