Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns: "Laurence de St. Maur (Seymore) 1337, rector of the parish. In Mass vestments. The single canopy depicts Our Lord in Glory receiving the priest's soul at the hands of two angels and surrounded by four apostles, St. Andres, St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Thomas. At the four corners are the four Evangelists. The side panels show, on the left, St. Maur, St. Stephen, St. John the Baptist and the Angel of the Annunciation. On the right are, probably, Our Lady, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Lawrence and a fragment of St. Christopher. Four are missing. It is said to be the finest brass to a parish priest surviving. INSCRIPTION (in the arch): Christ receive me, You who called me. And in the breast of Abraham, May the angels lead me. (On the breast) Son of God have pity on me. (Foot inscription) Here lies Laurence of St. Maurs who was once Rector of this church. May God have mercy on his soul. |
