Research Remarks
Published Description | From Bontell: The knight's jupon is here emblazoned with his armorial insignia. The same charge appears also upon a shield, suspended from a crested and mantled tilting-helmet: the crest is a bunch of turkey's [?] feathers rising from a hoop. Upon the girtle of Lady Harsyck [sic] appear the arms of Harsyck and Calthorpe impaled. These three brasses [this one, Sir John de la Pole, and the unidentified knight and lady at Broughton, Lincs.] appear to have been produced by the same artist. Bontell, Monumental Brasses of England (1849). From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns: "Sir John Harsick, 1384. In camail armor and jupon. His jupon bears his heraldic arms. With wife Katherine, with heraldic arms on her kirtle, holding hands. His tilting cap and casque are shown and bear his arms in azure and or." |
