Research Remarks

Published Description

From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Dame Maud de Cobhman, 1380, wife of Sir Thomas de Cobhma, daughter of sire William Pympe, survived her husband 13 years. Not in widow's dress. INSCRIPTION: Here lies Dame Margaret de Cobham who was the wife of Sir Thomas de Cobham. Who died the 9th day of April the year of grace 1380." From Bontell: The costume of this effigy is the sideless cote-hardi, buttoneddown the front of the figure, and worn over a close-fitting tunic. The skirt of the cote-hardi appears to be made open at the sides, in order to display the tunic: there is another example of this arrangement, at Ashford, also in Kent. The head-dress is reticulated.
