Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings, by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Margaret de Cobham, 1395, daughter of Hugh de Courtnay, Earl of Devonshire, wife of Sir John de Cobham, Founder of the Church. Inscription in French. INSCRIPTION: Here lies Lady Margaret de Cobham formerly daughter to the Earl of Devonshire. Wife of Sir John Cobham, Founder of this place, who died the second day of the month off August in the year of grace 1395. May God have mercy on her soul." From Bontell: This lady ... is habited in a kirtle and mantle, with a reticulated head-dress: the reticulations, it will be observed, are not continued down the sides of the face, as in the previous examples, but are renewed on the shoulders; this is a somewhat common arrangement. The head rests on two embroidered cushions, and the finial of the canopy is formed by a seated figure of the blessed Virgin with the holy Child. |
