Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Joan de Cobham, 1320, died 1298, daughter of Sir Robert de Setvans of Chartham, Kent. The inscription is in Norman French. The brass was known as Pardon Brass. She was the first wife of John de Cobham. Earliest known use of a canopy on a memorial brass. INSCRIPTION: Dame Joan de Cobham lies here. May God have mercy on her soul. Whoever shall pray for her soul shall have forty days pardon." |
